Based on what I have seen and the people it is coming from I feel quite confident this is the real deal.
Now the limitations of this hack vs say a modded xbox or jtaged xbox 360 is yet to be determined. My greatest hope is that this will lead to custom firmware and homebrew like the original xbox.
It would be great if it was as open as the original Xbox, but I doubt it will be, just because it wont be as easy for programmers.
I don't know why Sony, or anyone else would care anyway. First of all the PS3 was unhacked for how many years and was way behind in console sales, they are just now catching up to the 360... Them being behind in console sales effected 3rd party support and confidence, 3rd party company's were afraid to commit to the PS3. And I personally think IF the PS3 was easy to hack, like the WII, it would probably have more consoles sold, and if they just figured out a way to Ban people from PSN when using a hacked console, like MS does then people would still buy the games they want to play online.
So to conclude, they should just let this one go!! lol
