Hi all,

I sent some kid relative a Softmodded Xbox (Pakistan of all places), which worked great until he accidentally deleted something and it 'went funny'.

I was there on holiday last month and took with me AID and Slayers 2.7 thinking it would be easily fixed.
Well I tried everything but the same thing kept on happening.

Box would power up do a small black screen flicking thing and then come up with some sort of diagnostic EvoX dash with no options (apart from settings menu and 'start disc' option) - I don't know where its getting this dash from - I've tried formatting from both Slayers/AID and doing the complete installs and it's still the same.

So it seems theres some other files missing - most likely the MS Dash.

I've come back now so am looking for some sort of foolproof way of fixing it remotely :-(

What would be the best way to go about this?

Cheers

Pongo

It sounds as though it's booting the rescue dash, which means it can't find the hacked dash on E.

If it's modded with Kingroach the dash should be at E:\Dash\default.xbe, if modded with Krayzie it should be at E:\Dashboard\default.xbe. From your description of the rescue dash it sounds like Krayzie, but you should know as you modded it!

Your relative needs to boot with a rescue disc (CASH would be sensible) and check the E:\ partition for those files, and replace them if they're missing. CASH has an option to reinstall a Krayzie softmod - but you lose the contents of your E partition, including any gamesaves.

FYI, Slayers and AID are no use in helping to fix softmods, apart from giving you FTP access......

Ok - cool.

Yes it was Krayzie mod I had used. I have the CASH disc ready to post out - is this all I will need ?

Cheers

Should be. Krayzie protects the C partition, so it should just be the dash on E that's missing. On that basis you can just use Cash option 2-B-1-A-1-A, and that will reinstall the dash but leave everything else on C and E intact.

It could be the Evox.ini file is corrupt.

If there isn't a valid Evox.ini file the dash will display as you say. You can e-mail him a valid Evox.ini file and have him put it in the E:\Dashboard folder and that may solve the problem.
