it would depend on the player... if it would down-scale the image for SDTV/EDTV
but there aren't any HD-DVD or BRD players that exist yet...
also... why would you do that? why not just use a regular DVD player? both of the formats are supposedly forward-compatible anyway

i was wondering because the 360 and ps3 had those formats. thankks anyways
The x360 will output to any resolution that your television supports. I don't know how the PS3 will handle this, I suspect it will not have this functionality.
In addition the x360 doesn't use HD-DVD, it uses regular DVD.

OK a few things...
Thax: Bill Gates stated that they were considering a HD-DVD player for the xbox.
Now to the HD-DVD question, HD-DVD and BR-DVD are both formats for a disc. Just as CD and DVD discs are. HD-DVD just means that basically the format of the disc is different, but it will still carry the same information that you could find on a DVD. Now, HD-DVD can carry high-definition video that would probably be displayed in 1080i or 720p, however if you had a standard definition TV then it would most likely scale down the resolution so that you can view it.
