I have just done the RROD fix to a 08 xbox360. It worked and i got the green light, however the xbox, even when opened up with or without fan duct overheats to 2 lights in about a minute on the dashboard. I did not replace the thermal paste, i have tried both tight and loose screws on the sinks and re-overheated it to adjust. Do you think th thermal paste will fix this problem? Or do you think its a lost cause?

Cheers

Absolutely Artic Silver 5 from Radio Shack, I had the same problem and fixed it by following the instructions over at Llama's site http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/ring_...x-clamp_fix.htm
The overheating after your are done with the fix is crucial... just follow the instructions.

Also you should at least add a 70mm or 120mm fan on top of the gpu, and make sure the Fan Shroud is divided and has no leaks.

Let us know how it goes..

I would go with a thermal past that does not require any curing time such as the Arctic Cooling MX series.

Ok thanks for that guys I will try the llama tutorial tonight, I did not keep the fan plugged in as i rea another tutorial and it got the 2 lights in about a minute or so, so hopefully with the trick of keeping the fan on it should work properly this time, Oh I also just got some thermal paste on the way so will post results on tuesday, ish, depending on when it gets here,

Thanks again biggrin.gif

What do you mean when you say add a 70 or 120 mm fan on top of the gpu? How would you go about doing that as the optical drive is in the way. Please elaborate as I am looking to install some fans now.

I wouldn't waste money on Artic Silver. I feel its just over hiped. I would just fine some Ceramique thermal compound as it is cheap and affordable.

Artic Silver can transfer twice the heat of ceramique. However IC diamond compound can transfer five times that of silver. Its around $20 shipped and does a great job if applied correctly.

But it all comes back down to the heatsinks suck.

I believe these are both 120mm fans, he has his drive removed. For more cheap cooling you can try some of the twelve volt fan modifications.

To place the fan on top, you will need to run the DVD Drive outside the console, all you need to do is enlarge the DVD power cable, you can use a regular longer SATA cable. BTW if you don't want to enlarge the DVD power cable you can buy one on Ebay.

Is there any way to mount the dvd drive without just having it hanging out of the box? I am surprised there aren't a plethora of alternate cases available that optimize airflow with the 360 parts fitted inside. I can't find any except for one that costs like 8 bajillion dollars.

I would buy a damn acrylic cube if someone made one that fit a 360 reasonably. At this point I am not concerned about looks I just want to be able to move it as one piece.

Do you have to cut out the back? I am assuming it doesn't drop right in and you go on your merry way. Also Are there any good tutorials out there for how to wire a 3 pin fan receiver to the 360 mobo? I want to put some fans in but don't want to just permanently solder them to the board. All I can find is how to rewire the stock fans to the 12v spot. Like I said, I was looking to actually put a 3 pin receiver on the board somewhere so I can jump off of that with multiple fans.

Thanks for the help smile.gif

No the back of the xbox is not cut, my cables are coming out from the dvd slot on the front, but I could easly drill a hole on the back of the cosole to take the cables back.

Best way to get 12V power is from under the motherboard, check this post http://forums.xbox-scene.com/lofiversion/i...hp/t710211.html

If you don't want to do a permanent connection, just get the female and male connectors, from the fans all you need is 2 cables red and black, the yellow one is to measure the RPMs...

Hope this help,

You could try just the one 120mm fan on top of the CPU, make sure the fan blows `air into and not out of the 360 as this would disrupt airflow going through the fitted fan at the back, there is quite a noticeable temp drop using this method.
