Hi all. This is my 1st post. I hope you can help me.

I bought a pair of xbox's off a well known auction site recently hoping to repair them. They were listed as one having the RROD and the other would only play DVD's. When I recieved them I noticed that both of them had already been opened at some point (they were both from the same seller btw) and xbox number 1 which had the RROD (3lights 0102) had already been given the x clamp fix. So I decided to leave that and go onto the other. As described it would play DVD's but not games. When I put a game in it just says "please put this disc in an xbox 360 console"

So... Back to xbox number 1. I removed the heatsinks, renewed the thermal paste, gave the board a general clean and put it back together. I noticed that only 1 fan was working so out came the multi meter and I found the + for the GPU fan on the board was dead, So I decided to use the 12v fan mod. Now they are both working and the RROD death has gone, but the disk drive wont stay closed, it just keeps popping out on it's own. So I took the drive from xbox number 2 and put it in xbox number 1 and hey presto it works. I'm assuming this drive was the original one from this board as I put in EA Skate and it played straight away.

So.. Next I decided to update the dashboard as it was still on the really old one. I did this no problem (took about 20 mins to download and install) and again had a go at playing skate and it worked fine. Then I tried WWE12 and get a message I need to update to play this game so again I accept, but halfway through the install I get 1 RROL and error message on my screen E66.

Do I need to flash my drive and is so, how the hell do I do that

I don't want to play copied games etc I just want it to work like a normal xbox.

Thanks in advance
Jule

u need to figure out what drive really belongs in there. if it did boot a game at least u have the right key, u just have to solve what drive belongs in there.

Ok and how do I do that? laugh.gif I thought if it boots a game it shows it's the right drive? It currently has the BenQ drive. The other one (which wont stay closed) is a samsung. If it helps the xbox which now has the BenQ drive in it (which wont update and play wwe12) doesn't have a HDMI output on it, the other one does?

Thanks again

lets simplify this, the rrod unit, toss is trash. now, the console that booted a game then crashed during an update has the right dvd key, but the wrong drive in it. if you can identify the motherboard as being a jasper, then it is supposed to have a liteon in it. if it is any other motherboard, it can possibly have any drive in it. it would probably be best if u just brought it to someone, this is an easy fix, if u have a ton of spare drive laying around.

The rrod unit IS the unit that has now booted a game. I can play older games but not games which require the update. How do I determine the MB?

Thanks for this, but I think I must be misunderstood. I fixed the rrod unit bit ten it had open tray fault. I took the drive from the one that only plays DVDs and put it in repaired rrod unit and now it plays games too but only old ones. Does this prove it is indeed the right drive for the MB?

it only plays old games because of ap25, this proves the drive has the right key, but is the wrong drive. it probably needs a benq or liteon. teh one that only played dvd's, does it have hdmi, the rrod unit is trash and you should really not put to much effort into it. the play dvd one is your possible goldmine.

The play DVD one does have a hdmi port on it. What does this mean? I have taken the drive from this one and put it in the rrod unit. Why would it play games in the rrod unit but give the error message "please put this game in an Xbox 360 in order to play" when in the hdmi unit?

The BenQ drive I have is the one that won't stay closed.

Thanks
Jule

I think it might possibly be the correct drive but here's the problem, when you updated the console to the latest dashboard, it re-flashed the firmware of the old DVD drive to support the newer games, if the other drive you have is the correctone, it hasn't recieved the new firmware to let it play the newer games. So simply, if the "play DVD" drive was the correct one, you updated the wrong one to allow it to play newer games and because its the wrong drive, the console wont use it. Now you are stuck with the correct drive with the wrong firmware. Did that mke any sense?

the one that has hdmi and plays games as dvds can have a coolrunner chip installed (rgh hack) and then u wont even need disk, but if u want them, the rgh hack can give u the dvd key u need to make it start playing games again. look at the following pic and the power plug hole in the back of that 360, if it is a jasper, you are one mod away from having a very bad ass console for your kid. you will need someone like yourself to do the work, but will be very pleased with the results.

Thanks. I see what your saying but its not that it worked before the update and doesn't now.
Right, the play DVD drive is also the one I updated and now will play old games ie skate but will not play wwe12. The other drive has not been updated at all as it will not stay closed so I never bothered with it.

Using lateshaggy's very helpful images I have now determined the boards. Thanks for this smile.gif

So. Currently. I have

Xbox 1
Xenon board
20GB HDD (no idea if this is meant to be with this one or the other Xbox)
No hdmi
Samsung ts-h943a (will play old games, won't play new games. Recieved update to dashboard whilst in this Xbox).
Had rrod before I replaced thermal paste.

Xbox 2
Falcon board
Hdmi port
BenQ drive (won't stay closed)

When I first recieved these both from the same person who had clearly opened them both as clips were broken and screws missing inside.
The BenQ drive was attatched to the xenon MB. It had the rrod and after that was repaired the drive wouldn't stay closed.
The Samsung drive was attatched to the falcon MB and would play DVDs but not games.

I then put the Samsung drive into the repaired xenon MB and it plays old games. I updated dashboard and it still plays old games.

Could the HDD be an issue?
Am I better off trying to replace the laser in the BenQ drive and see if I can get Xbox 2 working instead.

Again , I'd like to thank all of you who have replied so far. It's all very much appreciated.

Jule

Well. Tried removing the hdd just in case but that made no difference either. sad.gif

I've noticed they are new on play at the moment for £79.99. Might just have to cough up some more cash if I can't fix these.

What you can try is take the key from the Samsung drive and injecting it into the Benq. See if that fixes the drive not closing issue.
