Hi,

maybe its a naive question but I dont own a PS3 yet and have not found any answer yet. Can I play the PS3 with the "good old" wired PS2 controllers? Or is it possible to plug in (and use!) a wired XBox 360 controller - it is a USB device, so it should be theoretical possible?
Thanks for your answer!

Axel

No, you cannot use an old fashioned controller. They ditched the old controller ports. There may be a converter some day, but it's unlikely. Can you use your original xbox controllers with the 360? No. It's the same sort of deal. They're going to squeeze as much profit out of accessories as possible. If you're not buying new controllers, they don't get as much profit. There is going to be a converter to use old memory cards though.

To answer your second question, it may be possible. Although I highly doubt the functionality will ever be brought to us by sony. Even the ps3 controllers don't use usb to transfer data EVER even while being charged via usb, they still communicate with the system via bluetooth.

I just tried using a normal Xbox controller with the PS3 via a cable I made that converts it to a standard usb male port. The PS3 just says that an unknown USB device was detected. =/

It would never work.

Wirelessly PS3 uses Bluetooth and 360 uses WiFi. So that sint gonna work.

Wired, even if you could get the ps3 to recognise the controller it would still have completely different key mapping.

The only solution would be an inline adapter that translates the keymap.

Tyrade over at ps3forums has apparently had success using a ps2 controller on his ps3. Thread here.

QUOTE
1. Plug in your PS2 controller using a PS2-USB adapter
2. Turn it on and make sure the analog button is on (the red one )
3. Set your sixaxis control as player #1
4. When the game starts up, Press the "PS" Button as instructed by the system
5. Wait until the actual game comes up and turn off the Sixaxis...
You dont have to unless its required....like fighting games, but for
some games the person that presses start is Player 1
Now it should be working fine and rumble and everything should work perfectly

Side note:
To get the Duelshock controller to work with PS3 games...dont know why you would want to....but if for some crazy reason you want to....at the XMB make sure the PS2 controller is in and plugged in like i said...pick the game.....and lol it should be working just fine...HAVE TO MAKE SURE THE ANALOG BUTTON IS ON...OR ONLY THE BUTTONS WORK...nothing else

My Dual Shock 2 works in the XMB using a USB convertor, however, it doesn't get detected when I try to play Shadow of the Colossus. Also, the trick above doesn't seem to work for me.

RF means "Radio Frequency," it applies to almost anything wireless (Excluding IR...).

The PS3 and Wii use standard bluetooth to communiate with the controllers.
The 360 does not use WiFi, it uses a proprietary wireless connection. Some people are calling it WiFi because it uses the same 2.6ghz band as WiFi (As does bluetooth wink.gif)

The Powerwave controller's right stick doesn't work right on the PS3. Just making sure everyone knows about this!
