The 360 is currently not specced to have HD DVD or Blu ray (although MS said it's still a possibility). But... PS3 doesn't have a hard drive built in. Think people - DVD's store about 9gb. Now what if it's 9gb compressed data, that extracts/expands to the Hard Drive, ultimately providing a better loading time (especially if it loads to the hard drive while you're playing, prioritizing). This means potentially the 360 can hold half the data of Blu Ray, and load at a faster rate. It could have the essentials (menu items, loading cinematic) already uncompressed and other stuff ready to uncompress to the HDD, and it could do this while your playing the 1st level or whatever.

And oh bollocks I have just realised the HDD is for media like music etc. Well I suppose they could reserve some space for games..

I'd rather have a built-in hard drive instead of a Blu-Ray / HD-DVD drive. I don't have a HD-TV, and I'm rather content with my current set, and I definitely don't feel like having to rebuy all my movies on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, after already rebuying them on DVD.

Sony will probably charge $500 for the console, and six months down the line release a 40gig drive for $100.

The HD will most likely be used for games, as well. Probably have it set where a certain number of gigs is used for cache, much like the current Xbox.

not all data on a disc is compressed and if it were the load times would a lot longer and a dvd can't have as fast data transfer as blue ray or other media with more storage since there is a lot less data/mm^2 on a dvd.

That's cool for you. As for me, I can't wait to get my movies in HD resolution even if it means replacing all my DVDs. It'll be more than worth it. I've had movies on VHS (all replaced with DVD by now) and LaserDisc, and D-VHS (1080i HD), and am just waiting to get them on BluRay.

I also already own an HDTV, as do all my friends with XBOXs. One of the reasons I chose the XBOX over the PS2 was because of its HDTV support. Whichever system supports HD better is the one I'm getting.

DVD-9 owns blu-ray in data transfer right now. It is twice as fast.
