I just want to know if ALL xbox's with the early drive are messed up.More than a few times a game has frozen up on me and the "this disc is dirty or damaged"message poped(maybe the disc was dirty, hmm) but audio cd-rw's work fine all the time.Has anyone with a newer XBOX had problem with games freezing?

If I were to get a newer drive from another XBOX would it be a problem putting it in?I mean would the other parts know this was not the original drive?

I bought my xbox about a week or so ago and have played some pretty scratched-up rental games with no problems...

I bought my xbox when it was released, the ONLY problem with that drive is that it doesn't seem to like CDRs other than that it works fine. I haven't had any freezes or abnormal load times.

And I don't think you'd have a problem putting in a newer drive.

I hope you guys are using good/decemt DVD brands, it's not worth using cheaper ones that are just going to wear your lens out faster.

Ronnie, I had the first released xbox also and I had some problems like that. It ended up ceasing function totally and I had to send it to MS. They fixed it for free and it has been perfect since.

MS even threw in a free xbox beanie (which looked pretty stupid) and a xbox cd case that I actually use. I sold the beanie on xbox for a whooping 13 bucks. laugh.gif

Maybe you could try getting it fixed before you do any heavy changes to the inside? (Too late?)

I bought my XBOX just after the price dropped and if you look on the system, it says when it is manufactured. Mine says April 30th 2002. I asked MS what this could be about because of older systems freezing and they said that the system usually freezes on the first few time you run it so now, MS runs each XBOX for a few hours or until it freezes. Then it is packagaed when the system has no diagnostic errors.

I have an XBOX from when they first came out. The question is, are the new XBOX supposed to be able to read CDR? Because mine never reads CDR, kind of like my first series Sony DVD player. argh! Now sony ones even play mp3
