the empty slots are there because the debug versions of the xbox have 128MB of RAM. there's a BIOS flash disk that allows you to re-initialise a debug unit in either retail or debug mode. i'm interested to try this disk out on a chipped retail unit to see what happens if you flash it in debug mode - perhaps it would enable the retail unit to access all 128MB as you suggest...
