I'm looking to set my 360 up to play on my monitor, but I'm clueless about which cables to get. The only ones I can really see seem to use the ports on the newer version of the 360 (unless I'm just completely misunderstanding this), but mine is from release and looks like this at the back:

Rather than:

Can I even do it without the HDMI slot? What do I do about sound then, too.. I need new PC speakers, right? My current ones are pish, but I'm down for getting a new bunch anyway as long as it's not fruitless.. Would these have the required input though? Argh.

Also need to then get, I presume, a KVM switch to switch between PC/360 display on the monitor itself.

Help?! Clueless, man.

Get the VGA cable from monoprice.com (just search for "xbox" on that site), it's like $7. A KVM switch is convenient, but not necessary

I you don't mind doing some soldering work you could opt for a vga port being added to your 360.

I used this guide here
-link

I did this recently and got it working

Official vga cable from microsoft is like $30-$40. Think they are like $35 on newegg.com

You don't need a HDMI port for a vga cable, it goes where the regular AV cables go. I use a chinese knockoff from ebay smile.gif its gold plated. I think it was like 20 bucks.

I have the 360 monoprice vga cable, and it is a piece of junk. It creates a ghosting/trailing image ingame text. Not recommended. Infact, all 3rd party 360 vga cable are not recommended. Just get the official MS vga cable, and save yourself the hassle.

I use dragon vga cables, They have worked perfectly. Just be sure to get a gender bending if your using your screens cable because male to male doesn't work.

Well..
I wasted $40 on an official cable, was kind of grainy. I bought a $7 set of ebay from hong kong and now I play on my 19in monitor in 1440x990 that looks better then my 36in 1080i tv.

You may have to change your monitor settings, but it is a hell of alot cheaper and safer to buy the chinese gold plated cables then add a vga port
