Hi there,

I just received an old Xbox from a friend of mine and I would like to install a mod chip into it. I read up on the FAQs that were provided by Chancer and I read lordvader129's post on choosing the right mod chip.

After reading lordvader129's post I suspect that the DuoX2 is the best bet for me since I am not intimidated by a little soldering. This is the one I am thinking of getting....

http://www.xbox-modchips.com/duox-chip.htm

But I am concerned about recovering from a bad BIOS flash. Is there another chip in this price range that can recover from a bad flash without using a programmer?

I've also heard that the Cromwell BIOS can be a pain. Is this correct? If so is there another chip you guys could recommend to me (keeping in mind that I don't mind using a soldering iron). Thanks.

Sorry if these are considered noobish questions. I did as much reading as I could but eventually I felt that I need to get some input from some more experienced xbox modders. Thanks again.

The Doux2 has two banks.

If you get the flashbios edition, either flashbios or cromwell + eurasia disk will work for you.
Find which one works, preferably flashbios, and once it's booted, flip the switch, flash, test.

If you screw it up, turn the xbox off, flip the switch back, try again.

As long as you don't f-up both banks - no problem.

Thanks for the reply Movax

So if I mess up both banks I'm out of luck? It couldn't be fixed without a programmer?

Would this chip be easier to fix if I flashed the BIOS improperly? Thanks.

Just pay attention and don't flash the wrong bank. If you screw them both up, you'll have to hotswap the chip to another xbox.

I don't know much about the X2. I believe you can purchase a programmer and connect it to a PC.

well with the duo youd need another modchip to hotswap with, with the x2 you need the PC programmer (or another chip)

one difference though is that the x2 can be messed up with 1 bad flash (if you have it set to 1mb bios) while the duo you would need 2 bad flashes in a row

but as movax said paying just a little bit of attention will keep you from messing up the bios, and if you use a live configurable bios like x2 5035 you really should have any reason to ever flash again after the first time

Thanks Lordvader129

I finally bought a chip, the DuoX 2 GS from this site...

http://www.xraychips.com/

Since it doesn't appear to come with a BIOS I guess the next step is picking the right BIOS and flashing it. I'll try the x2 5035 BIOS if that is the one you recommend. That BIOS allows me to run the evox dash, right? What about running Linux? Do I need a different BIOS?

My goal is to use my xbox as a media center for backing up my xbox games and movies and I'd rather set it up so I can boot Linux from evox. Is this possible? I guess what I'm asking is...

Can I run both Evox and Linux from that BIOS (if I have to choose between the two, I would pick Evox)?
