My friends 1.6(think its 1.6, it doesnt have a serial number on the bottm of it, but he bought it last may) xbox won't turn on every now and then. When you try to turn it on sometimes it will turn on fine and you can play a game for a while. Then when you turn it off then on later, the dvd drive will not open and the LED will flash green. Also, there is no audio or video - just black. After this happens we can't get it to work unless we let it sit for severl (about 7 or 8) hours, only to have the same problem the next time we turn it off.

mine is doing the same thing
i have to like keep pressing the eject button and eventually it comes on. really stinks. sometimes i have to work with it for like 3 or 4 minutes just to get it to turn on. most of the time if i've left the xbox off for a while it turns back on with the first try.

Someone help please? He gave the box to me and I really want to fix it. There is no picture at all or video. I did get it to show an error message once, when I started unplugging stuff...it was error 14. I can't get it to show it anymore. This is getting really frustrating.

did you open it yet?
if not just send it off to MS cause it sounds like a borked bios image. which you cant repair on a 1.6... there is a slim chance its a 1.4 though.. give us the actual date and lets see.

Yeah, I already opened it, I thought it was the DVD drive, but it wasn't. Also, there is no date listed on it whatsoever. On my first xbox on a silver sticker it has a barcode and the date on it, but on this one on the same sticker, there is absolutely nothing on it.
How could the BIOS go bad like this? Heat? Dust? What I find weird is that it works fine occasionally (like I said above...takes a few hours to boot again) but doesn't work at all other times....

Sounds like the same problem I'm having, and from what I've read, a modchip will fix it. But then I have another Xbox to run live on. My thread is here

Ok, based on my recent resaearch, I have either a 1.4 or a 1.5! I got it to turn on about 30 minutes ago and checked the kernal, it was 5713 and the chip you mentioned was Focus...so 1.5 or 1.4. So I guess I'm in luck. Gonna do the UDE trick tomorrow if it turns on. I'll keep you guys updated.

flashing green LED is DVD, and the lack of eject seems to support this
it might not be the DVD drive itself though, it could be a trace the yellow cable is connected to or soem toerh DVD-related component ont eh motehrbaord (probably not general IDE otherwise youd see some error 7s and 9s thrown in there too)

I have an xbox doing the EXACT same thing.
It starts on the first try if I let it sit for several hours, but most of the time I get green flash 1-2-3, then frag.
I have a Xenium ICE on the way, so I will let you know if the mod chip solves the problem. If it does, I guess it is the bios. Is there a way to reflash the bios back to factory fresh?
