Is it possible to connect to live using any usb wireless adapter or do I need to spend £59.99 on a MS one.

It would not surprise me if there are 3rd party adapters in the future. However, there is some form of peripheral authentication (one of the interfaces listed on the free60 wiki page for the MS wireless adapter mentions Xbox Security, that might have something to do with it) and even if that wasn't the case, such adapters are not always standard and the xbox would contain a minimal (perhaps just the one) set of drivers for wireless adapters.
