Ok. Got this xbox from someone, and the dvd drive is fucked. A small ribbon inside the drive is broken. the white one shown in the picture. When the dvd drive is closed the led on the front of the xbox stays flashing green as if it were loading the CD, but never stops flashing.

The disk does NOT get rotated, I put a CD in and it wasn't moved at all when I got it out.

OR, does anyone know of a cheaper alternative, I mean the way I see it. I want a CD drive that can read original disks as well as other disks, but I'm told the only way to do this is to buy a DVD drive that was an original XBOX DVD drive, which is stupid because they cost about the same (or just under) as an xbox.

edit: the drive is a hitachi-LG GDR-8050L, so if you have one even if it's broken, please post.

There has been an update.

Ok. To make sure the problem WAS specifically DVD drive related, I ripped the DVD out of my brothers famous crystal xbox, and put it in this one. The result was somewhat confusing. It worked but the light on the front of the console continued to flash green (as it would when a disk is loading)

this is the xbox flashing; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8S6CB9sehM

Your options are to buy an Original xbox drive or look around the forums for info on a few select PC drives that can be converted for use in an xbox.

A "google" or 2 wouldn't hurt either.

Sorry. The limit of my knowledge per your drive is that it's "rare". smile.gif

Cheers for the replies lol.

A google lead me back to here, http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=532691

However, getting that specific drive would cost me even more than a console. I'm feeling defeated right now. I guess I'll have to keep asking around for a hitachi-lg that has a working spindle but doesn't open properly or something like that.

That really just makes me sad, any other opinions on what to do with this box.

Note that you could throw any X-Box DVD drive in there. The Samsungs are fairly reliable (by X-Box standards).

what parts are you looking for?
I have a GDR-8050L that I've been unable to get a replacement assembly for.
Drive works great if you manually pull the tray out to load a disc.
Laser, spindle, and even PCB are in perfect working order. Looks like the previous owner forced the drive tray out and broke a couple plastic parts on the assembly so it will no longer eject a disc.

Shoot me a PM if you're interested in acquiring the entire drive beerchug.gif
