Every time I've bought SMDs from anywhere for my controller, they are either really dim, or dim as the batteries die. Are there any LEDs with the same quality as the original green ones?

I think it has more to do with supply voltage and not the LEDs, what colors are you using I have tried red green blue and white and found red to remain brighter through out battery life.

Well, I have two controllers with blue leds, and one is always dark, but the other will be bright when the batteries are full. They're both CGs

I've had the same issue with any wireless controller newer than the original Matrix PCB. I was looking on eBay for lower voltage blue 0603 LEDs, but they all seem to operate at 3.0v+. What's odd is that the green LEDs that I'm seeing require even higher voltage than the blue ones. Microsoft must have found someway around this. Perhaps low voltage green LEDs that I just can't find.

It has little to do with the LEDs. Your red, orange, and yellow leds will work the best because their operating voltage is approx. 2v, where the other colors are approx. 3v and a little higher. As stated previously, the matrix controllers are the best and then after that you need to have a decent charge on your batteries, have it plugged in with a play an charge or just used a wired controller. The colors that seem to dim more than others are typically blue, white, and UV/Purple.
