I have the Fall update on my 360 and I configured it to output 1080p. I have a 37" LCD panel that is a 1080p set. I am using the component video cables and my TV recognizes the signal as a 1920x1080p signal so that is all good there.

When I play games like Test Drive Unlimited, Oblivion, etc they all play fine with this setting. When I play Gears of War, I notice that there is one "line" going across the screen where it looks like the 360 is out of sync or something. The pixels appear to refresh just slightly out of sync giving it like a tear kind of view. Unfortunately I cannot take a screen shot. It only happens when either a cut-scene is moving the camera around really fast or while playing if I move the camera view really fast.

I do not see this in any of the other games that I have ran at 1080p.

Is this a problem with the 360 trying to render the output to 1080p and it just can't keep up with all the detail and stuff moving around at one time or is this a problem with using component cables? Or, is it something to do with my TV. I have not had any problems like this when using HD DVD or Blu-Ray.

The 360 will scale anything to the selected output specified in the dashboard. I have mine set to 1080p since I have the 37" Westinghouse 1080p LCD monitor. As I said in my original post, the LCD set correctly recognizes the 1080p signal.

Has there been any other reported problems with games after changing the 360 to display in 1080p? If I change my 360 to 720p display, I do not notice the problem. Only when the setting is set to 1080p. Could GOW be taxing the video scaler?

Mine does that when I'm watching the Motion City Soundtrack video "Hold Me Down" I downloaded from the marketplace. I'm using a VGA cable at 1360*768. GoW plays fine for me.

It seems as though you are describing what is known as tearing, what happens when v-sync is not enabled, there are many 360 games that tear like PDO and that crap flight sim game. Not enabling v-sync can help with frame rate issues.

I was under the impression that GEARS uses a dynamic v-sync that can shut itself off or on depending on whether or not the frame rate drops.

The 360 has a scaler chip in it so when it up converts to a resolution there is no hit to the frame rate so that shouldn't be it.

I have played gears all the way thru several times and I have never noticed tearing and I am pretty picky about that subject.

I play in 1080i.

I am not sure what could be causing the problem but since I haven’t experienced any tearing it may be your TV.

Just my two cents.

are you talking about like a line comes across the screen and then goes away, my tv does that to, i just figured it was the tv lagging a bit, since it fixes it self immediately after. Happens on games movies. Is this what your talking about?

It's not an issue with 1080p, its with the scaler. you should stick to outputting 720p as your not getting any better visuals with the 360 set to 1080p. unless you are playing a game rendered in 1080p

don't know about that problem but its best to avoid all scaling. so run your tv at 720p and not 1080p

I'm pretty sure Gears doesn't even run at 1080p, it only runs at 1080i. I use 720p though, it's not as good, but my 1080i setting seems to lag on me.

The recent 1080p fix on the 30th fixed the sync issue in GoW.

If your TV is an LCD and its native resolution is 1080p, then you should by all means use 1080p on the 360, even when it is upscaled. Having a native 1:1 pixel ratio on an LCD is very important. You'll get a noticeably better image that way.

Yes.

They have a 37" and 42" 1080p models.

My brother has the 37" and the image quality is very good.

I've got the 42" and I love it.

It accepts 1080p over comonent, VGA, DVI, and HDMI.

I only wish the 47" model was more available....and a little cheaper.

GOW looks great on my Westy. pop.gif
