morrowind could have been smaller. 99% of the games on the market could be smaller.
look at gamecube - the average size of a game is only 700-1000mb... developers just have to use techniques like shaders, compression, and in-game-engine-cinematics to keep sizes low.

dvd-9 will not be a problem.

pretty sure all cut scenes where rendered real time with the morrowind engine

doesn't matter... there's more than just that. if devs cared about it, they could have cut it to sub 2GB easy... but why spend time and money making a game smaller when you can fill the whole disk? pc game devs have to worry about the same things because hdds are only so big, which is why pc ports are consistently smaller in size than their console counterparts.

again, dvd-9 will not hinder developers at all - if all else fails we'll have multi disk games like gcn,dc,and psx.

cut scenes in next gen consoles will be rendered in the game engine as it will basically be pointless to place cgi scenes that looke almost exactly like their ingame counter parts, in addition the x2 has enough power for high decompression, (which most likely wont even be needed) remember the reason games are getting bigger and more indepth has nothing to do with space and everything to do with time management tools. right now the bottleneck for developers is NOT console power or media size, its development costs and time (also a development cost) the amount of content neccessary to cram a full dvd alone would require at least 4 years of developement, and by cram, i mean using every compression technique known to man, lol and using the current XNa studio kits it would take a minimum of 4 years to fill the dvd.

Can you buy an hd-dvd rom drive right now? Is the spec even final? The console comes out in 6 months... They will have to have 3-4 million units available worldwide for the christmas season. How exactly do you propose they accomplish that?
