So I picked up a v1.4 xbox the other day that had been softmodded using a SID disc. I backed up the EEPROM from it and used the same files(slayers c drive) I've used on a pile of other xboxs (with the new eeprom obviously) to build a new drive. Everything seemed to go OK (built new drive from scratch, applied ndure, locked HD) till I plugged in the new HD to the xbox and it booted to a black screen. Showed flubber and M$ then goes blank/black LED remains green. Tried hexen boot disc: same black screen green led.
If I plug the stock soft modded HD in it works fine. With hexen(on the stock softmodded hd) the led goes from green to amber to red and boots hexen.

So, since I have other softmodded xbox's available, I was wanting to know the shortest route to get this working...

1) can I just build a new xboxhdm using the true (not shadow) C files off of a working softmod and call it a day? (skipping the install ndure part as it is already installed)
2) Should I just rerun the existing xbhdm, and rebuild it all over (assuming the process just failed for some reason)
3) am I missing something obvious?

Every other xbox I've used this on had the 5838 dash (from the slayers disc) and have all been v1.6. (Not sure if its relevant, just attempting to be thorough)

Did you select the correct kernel when running NDURE? Since this is an older Xbox than your previous 1.6's, it'll be just the slightest bit different, and that could be what's holding you back.

That being said, I had a similar problem upgrading. First, I got my upgraded drive to stock-state and locked with my EEPROM to be sure it worked and booted. Then, I built from scratch using a pre-made softmod. Booting lead me to a black screen. Took me a few hours to realize by hotswapping over and looking into the HDD contents that somehow my E partition wasn't there. Started over again and it worked the second time.

Now that you mention it, no I didnt. Thanks. Knew it was something simple. How do I check the current kernal? The stock softmod doesnt seem to boot to anything but unleashx. So is there a way to check it via 3rd party apps? Ahhh... Screw it. I have time right now, so I'll just rebuild a stock HD and check thatway, although if there is anotherway it might be nice to mention here just because this thread will be short...
Thanks again.

and it turned out to be 5101 with this current box. Thanks again.
