I have the original DVD movie which plays fine on my Xbox, as well as my brother's Xbox. However, when I make a backup of it, even though it loads on my PS2 and Apex DVD player, it gives me a black screen on the Xbox. If I have it in the drive when it boots, it sits and reads it for a second at the MS logo, but then goes right to the dash. It also does the same thing for my brother's Xbox. I also have a miniseries (5 discs), I burned them all the same way but disc 2 does the same thing. I burned it three times the same way and it still gives me this problem. Can anyone give me any pointers?

I just burned another movie and it's still doing the same exact thing. I don't know what I could be doing wrong. I tried on-the-fly encoding with DVD Shrink to make an ISO to send to DVD Decrypter, then when that didn't show up on the Xbox I tried making an ISO with DVD Decrypter and then shrinking it, then burning it and still nothing. And it's just some DVDs it refuses to play. I can burn 10 copies of the same DVD and it won't work, but another one will, almost like there's something up with the DVD itself. Some of these DVDs I'm trying are part of miniseries sets, so you'd think they would all be set up the same, and if one disc worked the others should work, but nope. sleep.gif

And if anyone is wondering why I don't just use another DVD player, this is for my younger brother, he only has an Xbox in his room. I'd like to keep him off of the living room TV as much as possible, so it would be good to get this working.

Hmm. I took a look at your thread. I'm using Maxell DVD-Rs, my Xbox has a Samsung and my brother's is a Thompson. I don't think it's a problem with the DVD-Rs themselves, as I've burned many DVD movies before and they worked fine on both Xbox systems. It just now started doing this, I'm still using the same spindle of DVD-Rs that worked before. It's almost like maybe there's a setting messed up with DVD Decrypter or something, but I can't think of a certain setting that would allow a DVD to work on a PS2 and Apex but not an Xbox. When I put them in, the screen goes black, and if I press stop, it doesn't stop until about 15 seconds afterward.

I also just tried burning the files with TMPGEnc Author and still the same problem. WTF?

Wow.....I guess it WAS the brand of DVD-Rs. I have a brand of cheapo DVD-Rs I never use because the success rate of burning on them is about 50/50, and the Xbox hates them, but it booted. The video kept skipping because the brand sucks, but it worked. I just don't understand why some of the Maxell DVDs worked, and the others don't, and they're out of the same batch.

And the Samsung isn't dirty, and neither is my brother's Thompson.

Sigh. You clearly didn't get the general gist of that Thread. Maxell OUTSOURCES TO A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS!!!!!!! They also produce some of their own media. Chances are you got some Taiwanese (Ritek made) discs which suck (mixed results, early deterioration, ect.). If you get the Japanese made Maxells, they are usually produced by Maxell themselves and are quite good. Use http://www.dvdinfopro.com and pop a blank of each disc in and select the media ID icon and that will give you the media manufacturer ID on both discs. Post them back here and read some more of my thread and you will have a clearer idea of who you are really dealing with. DO NOT TRUST NAME BRANDS!!!!!!!!!!

I second that.

I've bought from no-name brands before and they've been total garbage. Some were 95% duds per spindle.

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!! It's kinda like Dodge outsourcing to Mitsubishi. Dodge can claim that it is a Dodge but the car is a Mitsubishi for all practical purposes. Same thing with media. Learn how to identify media manufacturers or to simply order unbranded media straight from the manufacturer on the net. As mentioned above, you can get Taiyo Yuden (considered by many to be the best manufacturer out there) directly from rima.com with no guesswork involved. Whenever you order unbranded TY from them you always get TY. Instead of going to the stores and hoping that the particular batch that you bought happens to be from a quality manufacturer. There are ways of telling before you buy them off of the shelf but it takes a little bit of research.
