A simple test, put a normal data CD/DVD disc into the drive and if you can't even open it up properly, the IDE-USB kit can't work properly like what I had mentioned in http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=562413

You should have gotten the other IDE-USB kit that I had mentioned in that thread ...

Can't u return the product and exchange for a workable one?

Of course you can use it on your PC which it was meant for in the first place. The IDE-USB kit is just for portability purpose ...

typical sales scam ...

To me, the kit is more for harddisk. You can test it out with harddisk and it will detect and work perfectly. You "throw" in a DVD devices, you will have problem. Just put any data disc, if it can't even read it, it is pretty clear. In the mist of finding a good kit, I had tested at least 4-5 different model. Some of them, you can detect the disc in the drive but when u try to do a copy and the DVD device spin up and it will be "gone" in Windows. The last one that I had tested is the one that I had posted and so far it is working fine.

Just ask for an exchange, if they still refuse then forget about buying anymore things from them in the future ...
