I found a lot of people in my boat, so I am posting the solution I found wiht the help of a very clever fox called Danin.
If you are stuck with a cromwell 2.27 that won't load or boot ANYTHING, read on:
Take a BIOS (like IND-BIOS) which is 256k. Copy it (copy + + + ) four times onto a file, eg. copy a.bin + a.bin + a.bin + a.bin > BIOSUPD1.BIN. Slip that in when cromwell asks and BAM, cromwlel is dead, IND-BIOS lives. Apparently it kept coming back becuase ti wasn't fully wiped out. This did the trick for me, I hope it helps you out too
