Ok, I purchased a banned xbox to play backups on craigslist, buyer said he had 1.6 firmware on it, but how do I check? Also, he did (forgot it, i hope) not bring the disc that lets me play the backups (not even sure what its called).

Basically, what I want to know is, how do I backup games and update the firmware?

Just point me in the right directions, links would be superhelpful. Any other wise tidbits and sage advice would be greatly appreciated. I know how to use the search function, but I am just so darn green I can't weed out what's what without a bit of help. THANKS!

It's not easy to tell which firmware you have... ask the seller? Since he's banned, it's almost certainly modded. Why bother flashing back to the original firmware? Since you're not playing on live, as long as you're modded at all it doesn't really matter what version you have.

As far as pointing you in the right direction... most everything else is pretty documented. I would recommend reading the FAQs and a LOT of posts, and come up with some specific questions. Like if you have a question regarding what a certain section of a procedure/guide/FAQs is referring to... that kind of thing.

get jungleflasher or dosflash and read the firmware on the drive to see what version it is. if it's less than 1.61 you are going to need the activation disk to play wave 4+ games. it's called activate.iso sorry but i can't give a link. i think it's against the rules.

The most recent zips of jungle flasher have had the activate iso included. If you can't play any backups at all, mostly wave 3 and before, than it has no special firmware. As stated above, the "special" disk is only if it is 1.6 and wav 4 or later games.

It's definitely 1.6 so i need jungle flasher and the activate disk. Honestly, I'm perfectly the way it is once I can get the activate disk so I can start playing the backed up games, but I'd like to be future ready as well and start learning how to get into the firmware and update it. Also, what discs are recommended for backups, etc. i'm reading all faqs as we speak (type), but if anyone else have any tips of the trade or pointers I'd appreciate it. Thanks so far.

Based on this link I have a BenQ (lite on Philips) VAD6038. Ok so Ive been looking into the faqs...all a bit complicated so bear with me, but I have a question so far. Since, my xbox was already modded, is there something I will be needing that was perhaps backed up by the original modder? LIke backup of the original firmware, or some type of key that I might need in the future?
