Well I think the ps2 scene aside from the issues with the people in it is also to do with the console itself. I, myself, had a ps2 for 3 years before I decided to open it up, simply because I didn't have much of a reason to. When I got my Xbox, it took me all of two days to open it up. This is because there is so much more you can (easily) do to an xbox.
All credit to X-Scene, as without the info, the community wouldn't be so big. In fact, if it wasn't for x-scene, I wouldn't even have an xbox now, as about 2 years ago I used to be such a ps2 fanboy it's really embarassing now that I look at it

Also what x-scene has is A LOT of info easily available, with the help of stickies and the marvel that is the search button
When my ps2 fan connector broke, I asked at ps2ownz (haven't really been to ps2newz for A LONG time), took two days to get the number of replies I'd get within about half an hour here and then none of their solutions really worked. So then I had to go and dig up an old V3 PS2 Neo wiring diagram and I had to take a guess at what all the numbers were. Fortunately, I guessed correctly the first time that point one was an alternate +5V point and I got back to pro evo
But the point is that at x-scene, the community is very active and helpful, and also the xbox is IMO easier to mod (it's awfully tight inside my ps2) thanks to M$ making it similair to a pc, so the ps2 fanboys' reason for the xbox's apparent 'lameness' is a reason for the community being better

So

on a job well done guys. Feel proud of this community
