I have a broken Hitachi drive that when I disassemble it and manually move the drive tray in and out the laser never gets fully raised into position to grab the disc and read it. Has anyone else comes across this problem? Am I going to have to replace the drive.

The problem is probably in the gears and cams that move the tray. I think theres a white piece that slides side to side to push the eye assembly up. Check to see if the stub on the assembly is moving to the end of it's little track on the white piece. If it is, check the other gears and parts. They can jump out of place if you bump the tray but look just fine.

It doesn't look as if the "stub assembly is moving down far enough. What can be done to rectify this? Am I stuck getting a new drive?

Just take it apart and reassemble it. I'm guessing (70%) that it's in the gears, a tooth skiped or something. Might take a couple tries. Just keep moving things as you assemble them and it'll come together.
