QUOTE(mikeandbandit @ Feb 13 2005, 03:54 PM) caught wind of another rumor, yet confirming the multiple versions of x2, bestseller games will ship in both dvd, and hddvd formats, the latter having better textures higher quality sound, and of course hd movies video and cutscenes, but never fear there will also be support for the "low-end" x2 in the dvd form. so expect a $200 version and a $400 version of XB2 at launch lol thats why MS made XNA! ok not really, but i knew i could get away with a comment like that because likely you dont know what it is. anyway, all developers have to do is create high resolution graphics and then reduce the quality. Pc games already do that, its not difficult at all. i can do that it on my home pc. it will take all of what? 2 hours to convert it to a low rez/quality game? obviously high rez games will cost more because they are on hd-dvds, maybe thats where that $99 rumor is coming from. i bet you get the collectors, special edition with bonus features and delete characters and levels for that price. QUOTE(m_hael @ Feb 14 2005, 02:40 AM) there has been NO confirmation on whether there WILL be several versions thus WHAT those versions could be is ALSO not confirmed or EVEN hinted at... regarding HD-DVD, the decision AFAIK HAS been made but I'm NOT allowed to tell you anything regarding that. are you speaking on public confirmation or confirmation period. as i have strong evidence including times and places of the annoucement, presentation and market plan. not made public of course. ok well what is the likelihood in terms of percentages that these events will take place, also what is the likelihood that hd-dvd is standard (feel free to give a 51% the info i've gotten says xbox next (code name for low-end) will feature no hd-dvd and no hdd, while the next level xbox HD will feature both, and the latter version being a pc/hybrid. these were details given to marketing heads in europe this past november for the x2s marketing strategy. im inclined to believe my sources but i am completely open to more info when its presented clearly and more detail. I don't believe the dual-format rumor. Imagine this scenario at Christmas time 2006:
(bustling shoppers getting upset in line)
Stressed-out mother: "I need an Xbox2, Burnout 5 and an extra controller." Equally stressed-out clerk: "Do you want the game on DVD or HD-DVD?" Mom: "I don't know, which ever one is better." Clerk: "That'd be the Xbox2 HD... $600 please." Mom: "WTF, Why?" Clerk: "Well, you need the Xbox2 HD to play the HD game, $400 for the system, $100 for the game, and $100 for the wireless controller; $600." Mom: "Well how about the cheaper one?" Clerk: "That'll be $350, Ma'am... $200 for the system, $50 for the game, and $100 for the controller... but PS3 is better." Mom: "Jesus Christ, fine, give me the PS3, Burnout 5, and an extra controller!" Clerk: "$400 please." Mom: "Fine... Goddamn ripoff if you ask me." Clerk: "Well, you can have the Nintendo Revolution for free after mail in rebates if you child is under 5 years of age." Mom: "Perfect, I'll take it." Clerk: But you can't have Burnout 5, Nintendo doesn't promote car-crashes for children. Mom (takes out gun): JUST GIVE ME THE DAMN SYSTEM!!!
OR For your reading pleasure:
Teen: "Hi, I'd like to return this game, it doesn't work on my Xbox2." Clerk: "Oh, I'm sorry, I can't accept that game, you've already opened it." Teen: "I know, but I didn't know that there were two versions of the game for each different system." Clerk: "But it clearly says it on this tiny sticker which reads 'only for Xbox2 HD.'" Teen: "Yes, I see that now, but I'm slightly retarded and can't read fine print despite it being emblazoned on the front of the game I just bought and opened." Clerk: "Well, you can buy an Xbox2 HD and use that game on it." Teen: "But I already have an Xbox2 Lite!" Clerk: "I'm sorry, but I can't help you, NEXT." (Teen side-arms the game into the clerk's face and opens fire on the MS display cases.)
I don't think that's how MS wants this war to be fought... And having worked retail for 7 years, I'll tell you, THAT"S HOW THE WAR IS FOUGHT. MS won't bring out the HD games until next year when PS3 is released, if at all.

QUOTE(pingrr @ Feb 14 2005, 12:26 PM) I agree with whett having multiple versions of the same game just doesn't make since for a home console. MS would just be creating a hassle that I wouldn't think they want to deal with. i dont understand how it could happen, if the idiot was willing to pay $100 for a $50 game that doesnt work for their system. if they are that idiotic to buy that then the deserve it. remember they launched the gameboy color, the advance, and the ds and the did not suffer mass stupidity, "umm i bought this gameboy game and its in black and white, when i clearly have a gameboy color" "umm thats because you have an original gameboy game." "ok well then how about you give me the gameboy advance version, that sounds fun." "well, number one its twice as expensive, plus it doesnt even work on your system." "fine, just give me one of those new ds games..." again if they released a hd version of halo 3 for $100 with tons of extra content, but also a $50 low-end version, it prevents them from having to tone down games, or their console, but also allows those who dont want to spend much money to get in on the fun.
