Picked Up A Sandisk 512 Duo For My Psp, Not really 512mb? Options

I poped this 80$ flake of plastic into my psp and after formating it, it only showed 463mbs? not 512mb? anyone else having this problem? Any info would be helpful, google searchs arnt shown anything useful.

even when harddrives.. 40 gig harddrive can be 38 gigs, 120 gig can be 118 or 123 gigs.. the #s they advertise are NEVER exactly the same.. sometimes a little less sometimes a little more

I believe it has to do with the formatting. If you were to format it as a different filesystem it may show more (but be incompatible with the PSP). I believe the reason is related to MS's "Gb" name. To MS, 1 GB = 1000 megabytes (the GB you see in Explorer is actually a gigObyte, not a gigAbyte. MS created gigObytes. If it's not an 'o' it's some such similar name. I read about it in Maximum PC), whereas 1 Gigabyte should actually be 1,024 Mb.
Needless to say, it's a complicated matter. That's why I'm not positive on it.

from what i can remember, a gigabyte is defined as 1000 "kilobytes" whereas a gibibyte is 1024 "kilobytes." the naming convention that we are used to vs the real naming convention is a bit confusing since they are mixed up very frequently. ie. a kilobyte is 1000, a kilybyte (true base 2) is 1048576. etc.

i understadn that theres always a small diffrence, but 50mb's is a hell of alot, almost a whole video (well Wolf Rain ep.), i guess ill call the company tommorow, as the package says for Sony PSP, it should be @ least 510mbs on a sony PSP, not some other OS, thanks for the replys guys.

it's gigabyte and gigabit

8 bits = 1 byte

example: your internet download speed is 1500 Kbps (or as advertised)

1500 / 8 = 187.5 KBps

Big B is Bytes
Small b is bits

your average download speed should be around 187.5 KBps


and it's definitely not that .. if it was the bits and bytes then it would 64 megabytes/MBs if it was 512 megabits/Mbs

you probably just got a "bad" batch

From my understanding the size displayed on the box is a selling point. Most hard driver manufactures define one gigabyte as 1 billion bytes, where as every computer geek in the world knows that 1 gigabyte is 1024 megabytes. If one mega byte is 1024 kilobytes, and one kilobyte is 1024 bytes the math would work out as follows

1 KB = 1024 Bytes
1 MB = 1024 KBytes
1GB = 1024 MBytes

So in 1 GB there are actually 1,073,741,824 Bytes

If the manufactures say 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 Bytes you can see that there is a difference (or loss) of 73,741,824 Bytes or 7,2013.5 KBytes or 70.33 MBytes.

So for every GByte the manufacture SAYS you get you need to multiply that number by
70.33

So for a 120GByte Hard drive

120 x 70.33 = 8439.6 MBytes or 8.24 GBytes

So on a 120 GByte Hard drive you would actually get

120 - 8.24 = 111.76GBytes

Lets to the same for you 512 MByte Card

Lets assume the manufacture defines 1 MByte as 1 million (1,000,000) Bytes

And we all know 1 MByte is 1,048,576 Bytes

1,048,576 - 1,000,000 = 48,576 Bytes or 47.44 KBytes

Now multiply the size of your card by your loss number

512 x 47.44 = 24,289 KBytes or 23.71 MBytes

So on a 512 MB card you should get

512 - 23.71 = 488.29 MBytes

You say it has 463 MBytes free so that is a difference of

488 - 463 = 25MBytes

Also you have to take in to account the FileSystem the card / disk is formatted in, and any "system" files that my be hidden from view that the PSP needs.

All in all i think you got about what you payed for.

If anybody disagrees with anything above, please let me know, as I would gladly say I am wrong if you can prove it.

^^^^ You are completely correct there. And like you said, I'm sure that the PSP formatting and any system files are taking up the extra 25MB that are "not there".

All in all yosomono99 is right, basicly what tech support told me along with there online help. This is kinda annoying, and should be a warning on the box somewhere >_< since there sayn its for PSP , id expect it to be a bit closer, but i noitced another thing. The file size of a video is smaller on the PSP then it is on my powerbook before I xfer it, so it all works out (explaining that 25mb we dont know wha thappens to, i guess it just adds up.), Ill return it for now and wait for the 1gig i guess, or buy another 512. i would say i would agree with you on most of it..but my 120 gig harddrive has 119.75 gigs =) which probably means it was something more than 120 gigs and the file structure pushed it under 120

space varies plain and simple

Hmm... there ususally is a "warning"... I'm pretty sure my HDD's both had warning on the box about the actual size.
