type? ide works best but with a connector sata drives will work.
BIG WARNING!!! if you have a sftmod you need a hdd that locks, with a chip, not so. http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/ find an hdd that you want and type it in here to find out if it'll work |

You will want an IDE (also called PATA) hard drive of 8GB or greater in size. If you have a softmod or want to boot the stock kernel for any reason, you will need a lockable hard drive. Pick one up OEM instead of retail if possible; you don't need all the extra crap that comes with a boxed HDD and you'll end up paying more for junk you don't need.
If you would like a suggestion, I recommend Western Digital's Caviar SE16 series. They are fast, quiet, dependable and lockable, plus they have a 16MB cache instead of the usual 8MB. This post has been edited by Vayate: May 22 2007, 08:16 PM |

I say this as a computer tech working in a college that has all Gateway computers that until recently, when our IT department's director put a stop to it, our computers all had Maxtor drives. We've replaced almost all Maxtor drives within the 5-year hardware refresh due to hardware failure. |

I believe Maxtor is now just a label Seagate markets consumer grade (read: lower quality, higher price, made for high priced retail chains like Best Buy, etc) hard drives under ever since they bought it in 2005. That said...they definitely are one of the more lockable brands if that's the only thing you're worried about, but the Seagate brand is likely a better choice now for quality.
Edit: On a side note, I recently added a Seagate ST3200827A 200GB to my Xbox and am very impressed with it. Despite it being a 7200RPM drive...it's much quieter than the 8GB Western Digital drive that came stock with it, and I had no trouble locking it aside from my BIOS trying to freeze it (stupid Compaq, workaround was to hotplug the IDE cable when the XboxHDM bootloader menu came up then select the locking tools boot).
