I have to flash a friend's hitachi 78, with ixtreme. The thing is he had already had his drive flashed (xtreme 1.6) but doesn't have his original.bin file.

I loaded up toolbox and it seems to get the key just fine. However, I've been told that the 78 fws are different between them or something, and that I can't just go and patch it (or maybe copy his key into my own original.bin which I do have), and that he is basically screwed. I even see in the readme/tutorial it says to get the original.bin file

So is this so and he is screwed, or is there a way to get aroud this???

Thanx!!!

with FW toolbox 4.0, you have the option of recreating the your original firmware, so you do not need the original to restore (you have to be careful there are 4 version of original for the v78), Never tried, but check the FWtoolbox 4 thread

What you need to check is just above where the key is showning the toolbox will show you what location the key is stored in. "Key Information"

That is the important thing the location of the key "Key Information"

Then there will be a option to make an original firmware somewhere. Looks like Tools, Recover Lost Original File.

For example my Key Information is stored at @4C30, another location is @4B00 and there are two more locations as well

Just make sure the drive you want to restore you also chose the same Key Information when recovering the original or you will brick it

Ok, here is what I did:

- Yesterday I connected the drive, and did the dump, and I got the file "current.bin"

- Today, with the info you gave me, I opened up that file, noticed that it said @4B00, and went to:
Tools --> Recover Lost Original File

It told me it could take some time for analysis, blah blagh, and that a window would open to indicate where to save. I started the proces, and then when it finished, I chose "original.bin" to save in a dir.

- when I open up this file, it show the same key, at the same location @4B00

I this supposed to now be a valid original.bin file for my drive, and I can do the process as indicated in the tutorial? (To either restore first, or not) ?

Thanx!

Just check that in the Line "Rom version" it is just showing "Hitachi GDR31201-0078, and thats all nothing after like :iXtreme" etc because then it is not a original file but a "hacked / modded one"

You mean when I open the newly created file right? I should check that it says that, plus that I have the same key, plus that it's at the same location right?

I notice that the toolbox pack also has an original fw folder that I guess that's where it gets the data from.. I theory if I compare that file with the one I create I should have the key as difference...

Anyone else care to comment?

Well, I went ahead and did it. I had both files from another friend I had flashed, so I loaded up the hacked firmware, did the restore process, nad then compared the generated file to the original.bin I had. Both were identical smile.gif

So then I did it with this new drive... Read the FW, generated the restore, and flashed/restored with the generated file...

Tried a backup: no boot. Tried an original, loaded just fine biggrin.gif

So then I just flashed it as a new drive, and both backups and originals loaded fine, so mission acomplished...

Just a doubt:

Aren't the fws that come with toolbox 4 supposed to be originals? Because I tried loading one of those (the one that corresponded to the same place for the key), and pasting the key I had and choosing "replace key", and when I compared the file with the original on, they were different.... How come? uhh.gif
