It seems like I would prefer a 5400 RPM, but a 120G/5400 rpm drive seems to be relatively hard to find... I would like a quiet one (needs to run cool too, of course). Anyone want to brag about how good their HDD is? Thanks,

Basically ANY EIDE hard drive will be fine.... (well, except maybe the IBM's, but that's another story).

I'd just go with a reputable brand that you like, and get whatever they offer. I personally recommend Western Digital

I'm using the Samsung 120G 5400rpm drive. Ordered online for $124 including shipping. The drive is quiet, runs cool, and locked using ConfigMagic2. biggrin.gif

Any would do but not all are lockable which is VERY important if you want to use your modded XBOX to go on live since you have to disable the mod chip.

Just keep in mind though, almost every mass-producted hard drive out there is lockable.. I heard of maybe 1 or 2 that arn't but havn't seen then being offered for sale much anymore.

Is there anything wrong with a 7200 rpm? Overheat?

I have heard that the 7200 rpm hard drives are prone to over heating, but I actullually don't know anyone whose hard drive crashed because of this. But buy the 5400 rpm ones just in case if you can find one. I have a question though...I thought if you swapped your hard drive and have a modchip, it is still impossible to use xbox live even if you disconnect it.

7200RPM drives will work just fine with the XBOX, just don't block the ventilation of the XBOX and you will be fine.

No, you can use XBOX Live with a replacement hard drive if you lock the hard drive.

If you lock the hard drive, then you can boot the XBOX with the modchip disabled and the hard drive will still be usable... if the hard drive is unlocked, the XBOX will try to unlock it when it boots the original BIOS and fail. Thus, no hard drive.

Just remember, never connect to XBL with the modchip on... otherwise, you will never connect again.
