The lamp shade is a consept that dates back to candles if not earlier. It's a device to allow a omnidirection lightsource to be on the same level as the people in the room. If a lamp on eye level with a normal person was without a lamp shade it would make looking in it's direction <depending on the lumiancy> painfull or posibly damaging to the eye.
Shading allows for a shaping of the light allowing it to be on eye level and not a eyesore.
