I've successfully backed up movies to the HD, can I use an app to play it from the HD?

I have the app, but do I need to convert it to divx first, or can I just browse some how?

i convert my dvds to divx on my pc using smart dvd ripper and then ftp them into the right folder and play them with xbmp.
