Yeah so I was fitting in the mod chip with the xbox turned on to see if I could get the green LED to go on and the thing just made a pop sound, and I smelt a smoke smell. I dont know if this affected it badly cause when I try to fit it now it does the Christmas Light LEDs My xbox boots up normally without the modchip but not with it. Do you think I can get a refund? I ordered it from Sys-mods.com
On another note my factory HDD fan has died. Where can I purchase a factory fan on the internet? If I were to purchase a 8mm fan do you think I could take it to compusa and let them install it? TIA |

1) NEVER install anything on ANY electronic device with the power turned on. 2) Your mod chip is totally fried 3) No you cannot get a refund. The chip was not at fault, you were. Warranties don't cover user inexperience. This pretty weak. Common sense should have told you to turn the power off. This post has been edited by Intelligoth: Nov 16 2003, 03:39 PM |

when i installled my chip my fan died to for some reason so to fix i just soldered the wires from a from a 8mm fan off then soldered them to my xbox fan and used the third wire as a ground.( i just screwed in under the screw).

This sounds quite unbelievable.
Don't do that when you're fixing a car either... You are lucky if you didn't break your BOX at the same time. ALLWAYS read the instructions before installing any electrical stuff. If you don't have them, get them, ask someone, use google... In the future, start with tutorials in http://www.xbox-scene.com Good luck. |

I worded it all wrong in the beginning, I just tapped the chip to make the green LED come on and the pop sound happened, I know it was stupid, but at the time I wasnt thinking to great.

I think you mean 80mm fan. 8mm is very, very small. Here's a tip, don't buy an 80mm PC case fan, too much dremelling involved. Go and buy a Pentium IV heatsink and fan assembly. They only cost about $12. You can take the fan from the heatsink and it fits perfectly in the spot for the stock fan. Won't go in the clips though, so just use a little bit of hot glue on the bottom of the fan and presto! FYI, Pentium IV fans are 70mm. |

BTW for the fan is there anyway to test that the fan behind the hard drive is dead, and not the plug that the fan goes into on the mobo other than using a multimeter cause it doesnt look like i can goto the store and look for one anytime soon.

take the fan out and plug it into one of the fan connectors on your PC's motherboard.

There is a problem here, the xbox fan works when i plug it into the processor fan plug on the mobo, so the plug that is used for the hdd fan is dead, what should i do

I am wondering if there is a splitter for the CPU fan input in the mobo. Maybe a reason why the fan behind the HDD doesnt work is because it was once bent and I had to straighten it out?

Easy. Modify the power connector on your fan to use a Molex connector. Then just use a power splitter cable off the Hard Drive's power cable. There's even a tutorial for it. |
