I put a new disc in today with Live content-everything fell apart (failed Live update), and now I can't boot without a disc in the machine. I booted with the mod chip disabled (eject button), so I'm not sure why this failed.

Anyway, I want to restore my box back to factory specs, and remove the mod chip. But first I assume I need to get the bi^*h booting again from the disc.

My backup from before the evox xbe went on only contains the original xboxdash.xbe. What files do I need to have on C: to boot correctly? I'm sure I screwed something up trying to restore this, since that file is probably out of sync with the previous Live updates.

Either way--can somebody tell me the minimum file structure that needs to be in place to boot to normal, original, factory MS dashboard?

Thanks much...

BTW--error 21 is what I"m seeing without a disc, and the evox chip is old--very old.

do a search using "update.xbe" in the forum, i think that there is a thread at the newbe session...
you'll see that the issue is rather old, a few days ago i posted also some questions, see at the same forum under dashbosrd/evolution.
Does your MS dashboard works?

No, I replaced the evo dash with the msxboxdash.xbe (renaming it back to xboxdash.xbe), and I get error 21 when I boot w/o a disc.

I've backed up and removed the Live directories, and put the original MS dashboard back on. Does anyone know what other files needs to be in the c: root? Right now I just want to get it booting back to factory specs. Still getting error 21 ;(

get a slayers boot disc and use the files from there to restore C:
that should ensure you have everything you need.
