I assume everything is working. If I disconnected the HD data cable and turn it on. Does it show anything on the screen?

I got the problem that my friend gave me his xbox without the hard drive and modchip. But he said it still work with the modechip since he bought a new one, so he gave me the xbox without modchip and HD. I wonder even if it has no modchip and HD, will it support to show anything on screen with an error message such as "searching for HD?"
