Every single day I come onto the forums and every single day I see a stupid post that asks which Samsung drive will work in an xbox. This post should answer that stupid question and end the discussion once and for all. (Unless someone with some firmware writing skillz decides to change some firmware for the other drives, but I dont expect that anytime soon)

The following drives, when modded, will read everything you put in it, (there is some dispute whether they will read DVD+R but some people can get them to work), including originals.

Samsung 616T
Samsung 616F

The names above mean ANY form of that model. A Samsung 616Flkshdlfjlskd will work, because it starts with 616F, same goes for 616Tlhhuiowhge, it doesn't matter what is after the 616F or 616T if it even has that much in it, IT WILL WORK. So guess what that means the following drives WILL NOT WORK.

Samsung 616A, 616B, 616C, 616D, 616E, 616G, 616H, 616I, 616J, 616K, 616L, 616M, 616N, 616O, 616P, 616Q, 616R, 616S, 616U, 616V, 616W, 616X, 616Y, 616Z

Many people ask what the difference between the Samsung 605B and the 616t/F is. Well, bascially nothing, but there are a few more things on the 616t/f that make them workable in the computer, such as an eject button, a volume control, a headphone jack, power connector, jumper settings, ETC. It IS possible to take the laser from a 616t/f and put it in a 605B, I have heard that it improves the readability of Cd's but I have not personally tested this.

If you are wondering how to mod your Samsung drive, just use one of the handy dandy tutorials that nobody seems to be able to find. Here is the newest and also IMHO the greatest Samsung drive mod tutorial.

http://www.consolecasemods.com/tutorials/SammyHi.pdf

If you need to know how to mod the plastic for the 616F go here.

http://pirate.sparkhost.com/~arakon/samsung/fix.html

IF YOU DONT NEED TO PLAY ORIGINAL CD's
For those of you that dont want to play original cd's, but would like a different drive, almost any PC drive will work, just follow one of the following tutorials to get it to work.

For Any General PC DVD Drive

For A Sony DDU1612

if it isnt modded it wont play originals, it will play burned copies though

and you need some sort of mod (chip[, TSOP or software exploit) to play burned copies

Bump..

I've gotten really tired of this question.... And yes people need to start reading before they ask some really stupid questions that have been answered way to many times... Most other forums people will tell you to read before you ask any question and also use the search button.....

As the original post states, the 616Q will read BACKUPs, but it will not work with originals. Not much more to say.

Ok I know some ppl will probably get cranky about a question on a dvd drive but I have to ask.
From all to tutorials Ive read u need to have your xbox modded to put in a new dvd drive. I have an xbox with no mod and a dvd drive that is not working. Is there anyway to replace the drive at all?

I saw some pictures of Samsung drive label. On the first line, it only says:
CODE
SAMSUNG                                   DVD Master 16E   MODEL SD-616

How do you know if it's a T without taking a look at the pcboard?

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm trying to make sure I'm buying the correct one without ever seeing one myself.

Have the problem with the T or F thingy here aswell,
none of the shops has that information.
Guess you would have to ask them to take a look on the drive...

I do not really need the original xbox games playback but would really like cdr-rw compatibility.
Problem is that i have an Thomson drive.

I don't want to put an additional drive upon the xbox to do this,
my wife would kill me for it love.gif

If i understand it correctly the pc drives do all miss the eject option.
Possibility to eject needs modding them, right?
Beside that they all do need to be modded to fit in the first place.

But, is it really nessecary with all "compatable" drives to mod them to be able to use the eject button on the xbox?
