Ok i was recently browsing the internet and today i was looking for plexi-glass for my dvd window mod. Using good old google searching for plexi-glass it turned up this site:
http://www.whiningdog.net/Articles/Mods/20...3-HDPlexiglass/
Its on how a guy made a window for his HDD and it still worked. It was a small one and it didn't have anything to do with xbox but i thought it was pretty cool.
My question is, would one of you modding guru's try this out on your box? It would be WAY cool next to a DVD window i think. But i'm to worried about ruining my precious drive to do it! So hey if you do it send me some pix or post in this forum!

Also a forum on the Mod here:

Please do a search next time before you post.

This has been covered numerous times.

Each and every time, it is decided that it is not a good idea to attempt that mod. Chances are your HDD will die.

From the million and one posts about it, the conclusion seems to be that older ones are more stable with this type of mod, and they will last longer. Newer ones will not last as long, if it all.

A spec of dust, smaller then you can see, will kill your drive.

So chances are slim that anyone here will actually try it, unless they have an old HDD lying around. Even then what good will it do in an XBOX? None.

Though from what I hear there are some companys who make HDD with windows in them already.

Would be a nice, neat mod. But too risky.

Nah, don't worry about getting it deleted. If the mods feel it needs to be, they will.

But yeah, searching about stuff like this will turn up a ton of results, for future reference.

I believe that some hard drives are sealed with Nitrogen? rather than the older way of just sealing with oxygen. That way if you were to open it up, it'd be screwed as soon as the case was taken apart. I may try it on my spare 1 gb drive upstairs in my closet, and leave it in my pc just to see what would happen. I can't imagine leaving it in sun light would be a good idea either. (like cd's)

They're not sealed with nitrogen because they have filtered breathing holes in them to allow for altitudinal/moisture variations.

Yeah, I was going to add something about that in my first reply.

No there is nothing to do with nitrogen in HDD's. That too has been addressed/answered.

Here is a nice little window mod. Instead of cutting it out, he just made a new lid out of plexi.

Shoot, I would do it on a 250MB HDD, but not on my 120gig drive laugh.gif
Plus, shrink wrap aint going do it. You need clean ass air tight room, germs free, etc room to do this shi#.
