yes, but the most easy and the one uaualy used are the hdd wires and the controller ports

yeah if you're putting LED's on your case get it from the HDD. If they're on your controller then get it from the controller. with the HDD you can get out 12, 7, or 5 volts. With the controller i think 5 is all you can get

dont wire them into the controller ports! i did that yesterday, and i lost all functionabiliy in the controller ports, not of the buttons on my controller worked. Do ur self a favor, and get the power from somewhere else

Most likely that's because you did it WRONG.

Hundreds of people have used power from their controller ports successfully.

just use the resistor calculator in the pinned topic

the controller voltage is 5V, LED's draw up to 30mA

simple

provided you use a high enough value resistor the LED won't pull to much current and blow itself up!


picture an LED as a tap, thats stuck full on

picture the resistor as a piece of narrow pipe



when the taps full on, it sprays water everywhere, the only way to reduce the water flow is to prevent so much water getting to the tap


if you put a piece of narrow pipe in, less water can now get to the tap, controlling the water flow!



in simple terms the resistor 'blocks' electrons, if an LED has too many electrons it blows up

Actually, LEDs die of thermal runaway. In a nutshell, too much current passes through the LED which causes the LED to heat up. The hotter the LED gets, the lower its resistance becomes. As the resistance lowers, more current passes, creating more heat and so on and so forth until the thermal tolerances of the LED's active material are exceeded and it literally burns itself out.

If you keep LEDs cool, you can actually put a lot more power though them. This is the basis behind Luxeon star LEDs.
