If you want to play on xbox live then you must lock your hard drive (so you can boot original bios on TSOP and play a game from that so you won't get banned) The downside of a locked hard drive is that if you don't have a backup of your eeprom and your mobo dies you might as well through it away or use it as a paper weight. For me I leave mine unlocked except when I want ot play on live. That way you get the best of both worlds.

Umm... That is exactly what original bios does (heinrich was just explaining in technical terms) It boots of the onboard bios, or TSOP. Unless you have xbox live then you don't need to worry about this.

When you select "original bios", the smartxx releases d0 and reboots...

well I did that, starting up from the smartxx screen, but it brings up the screen saying that I must contact customer service... I'm asking if I'm supposed to put a .xbe or anything on the hard drive...

you need the orginal xbox dash file in order to boot with the orginal bios. Also to boot to the orginal bios with smartXX simply press the eject button to turn the xbox on.
