I Want To Soft Mod My Xbox But...., Soft modding xbox with linux already... Options

ok so i'm a total noob to the xbox. I'm buying my friends, he won his from someone. So first off i want to soft mod itbecause i want to play dvd-rs. i don't care about xbox live too much. Now my friend's xbox already has linux installed via the mechassualt save game exploit. But from what i've been reading they were supposed to have evolx installed too but i guess this savegame file didn't have it on there. So now i have linux installed, and i want evolx and the ability to play backups. Now can i just ftp into the xbox via linux and load the files and whatnot to make evolx installed and be able to play dvd-r's? or what's the deal here. What do i need to do next. Do i need to put another saved game exploit file on there via usb drive? I'm totally lost. oh i believe the xbox to be a version 1.3 or 1.0. and i have no idea what number the dash board is. but i want evolx because it has the media player right to play divx files and whatnot?

FTP into the Xbox, install a dashboard exploit (I recommend UDE), and get rid of Linux once you made sure everything was back to normal and you have the full dashboard exploit on there.

ok i can figure out how to ftp to it in linux probably but how would i install the new dashboard, just copy the files over? or would i just find a tutorial and pick up where the tutorial has ftp'ed the xbox. also any suggestions on where to find these files? or at least what their correct names are so i can search for them. i already have a file with evolx and some sort or bert and ernie files. should i just use those?
