Please don't flame me, I know this is an xbox fourm, but dreamcasts seem to be fairly well liked around here. so I have 2 dreamcasts, and 3 games. Hydro thunder, works fine on both. Skies of arcadia, disk one won't load the menu after the intro, but if I load menu off of disc 2 I can put in disc one and play, both systems. Shenmue I get "now loading" and then a black screen, both systems. Anybody have any idea what could be wrong?

originals or backups you talking about

if backups - my guess is the troublesome ones are over 74 min & perhaps hydro thunder is under 74 min

this seemed to matter for later Dreamcasts & DC-SB discs

Yeah the drive has likely gone south.

Drop by Gamestop and pick up a new Dreamcast for about 30.00-40.00.

Get em for the whole family.

Yup "originals" are fine.... as are backups...
------

The DC_SB is a Dream Cast Self Boot disk.

Early on it was discovered that there was a "back door" to the Dreamcast, in that if a disk was burned with a initial AUDIO track followed by a DATA track the Dreamcast could boot from normal media.

Initially it was too complex for people to adjust their backups to encompass this requirement as it needed additional disk space.

With the advent of 800mb disks, it became possible to merely place the audio track first followed by the contents you want booted while still retaining space for the larger titles.

That is ANY Dreamcast will boot "backups" burned this way.

I find it odd that I have 2 dreamcasts with bum disc drives. But then again I find it odd that I have 3 games that don't work. The third one is resident evil code veronica, it boots the menu but when I select new game, it says insert disk one, disc one is in, so I sawp disc 2 in and it says the same thing.

Well they ARE booting! It's not a drive read issue.

It could well be that you have two identical disks with one mislabeled.

I've seen this happen a lot.

check and be sure yours are cd-r compatible, some of the very last ones released weren't, possibly they were also harder on gd-rom discs and therefore wont read like they should

No. He gets a valid boot in both cases.

It is NOT a compatibility issue.

Well shenmue won't get past "now loading" on a black screen, the one before the menu. And skies of arcadia plays the intro movie. So i might have 2 of the same disc one mislabeled, that could be the case, it came from a video store. I'll have to check that out.

Are these new or "used" disks you obtained?

e.g. Shenmue?

Four.

Yup suspect your media.

It seems you are getting some bad stuff.

BTW: You REALLY should read up on "the usual places" or "the usual sources" via the front page...
