I bought a used xbox off e-bay and modded it up with an x2, and 120gb HD. Been runnig fine for a few weeks... Went to play it one day, and blinking red light... I realize the xbox is prolly dead, but I locked it, and was wondering the process to make it able to be transferred to a new box... I remember reading about this awhile back, but I searched and looked through 100's of posts and still cant find any help... If anyone can help me out here, or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. THanks in advance....

It depends on how you locked it. If you used Configmagic then you can put the harddrive in your PC, use hdunlock and use the masterpassword "TEAMASSEMBLY".

If you had backed up your eeprom, then you probably also backed up the user password, so you could use this if you locked it with another method.

PS Red flashing is normally due to a corrupt eeprom - so you could restore it if you have made a backup and copied it to your PC.

CatDog2 or anyone else...

I did use ConfigMagic to lock it, therefore I would like to go the route of unlocking it via the PC. Couple questions here...

When I put the HD into the computer, it isnt recognized by windows, it shows up in my BIOS, but not windows... How exactly do I get that to work to unlock it???

Also... I locked the HD using ConfigMagic.. Doesn't that automatically make a backup of the EEPROM in E:\ ? If it is there, once I unlock the HD on the computer and put it in another box to get the EEPROM Backup off of it... How do I apply it to the EEPROM in the dead box to make it work?

Thanks again in advance...

Download HDDUnlock here. Unzip it, and put the files on a floppy dos boot disk.

Connect the drive to the PC, and boot into DOS using the disk. Run hdunlock.exe choose your drive, then enter the master password TEAMASSEMBLY. Then run hddisabl.exe and again choose the drive and enter the password. It should say done, and the drive is now unlocked.

Once you have got the eeprom.bin off the drive (in another xbox), and assuming your xbox is flashing red only (not red/green)...

Download XBTool here. Open up a X2 bios, embed your eeprom into the bios, and save it. Flash the new bios onto the modchip, then put it into your xbox. Hopefully it will bootup, and you can use configmagic to fix the actual eeprom on the motherboard.

Some people have said that the embedded eeprom still wont boot, so you can also try:
http://arisme.free.fr/Xbox/Reflash/
or
http://rex.xbox-scene.com/I2C/i2c-prog.html -EEPROM stuff at the bottom of the page. I have used this one and it works great, but most people find the other methods easier.

Twenty Minutes Later......

I downloaded unlockx and the hdunlock talked about above...

I put the HD in my PC and booted to a boot disk and first ran "unlockx" the program started and had the model number of my HD and next to it it said that it was UNLOCKABLE...

Then I loaded "hdunlock" it showed my HD in the list, I selected it, chose unlock, and put in the pw "TEAMASSEMBLY"

it said DONE!... then I tried to run "hddisable" and it said device not ready...

Put the HD back in my working box and trunned it on... Error 06... so it didnt work...

Any ideas...

Thanks yet again...

unlockx has not been mentioned - and I don't recommend it because I know from experience that it is buggy and sometimes doesnt work.

I have never had to use the master password (I always backed up the eeprom and the user password) but have had no problems using hdunlock/hddisabl. I can't remember if it has an option for user/master password levels?

You could also try ATAPWD for the master password entry.

ATAPWD was the only thing that would work on one of my drives. Try it.

Well catdog im back, and in a good mood!

THe guy I was modding it for, went out and bought a new xbox, and told me to put the HD (from above that I saved) in the new box along with the Xecuter. After that he told me to keep the busted (blinking red) box for what ever I wanted.

Once I got into the HD I took the ConfigMagic eeprom backup and got it to load onto the busted xbox after many tries.

So now I got a working XBOX for free! THe only thing is it has no HD in it. I have about 10-20 OEM XBOX harddrives laying around... (some xbox's that they came out of)

It there ANY way to unlock one of those OEM harddrives and use it in my new box? Or do I just have to wait to get the $$$ for a modchip and new HD?

Thanks again for all your help!

Many tries? Which method did you use? Why did it take multiple attempts?

You can only use another harddrive if it is unlocked. If an OEM drive is locked, and you don't have the xbox the drive came from, then it is a paperweight.

Assuming you have an unlocked drive with the dashboard files on it, you can use liveinfo to open the eeprom.bin file you have, and generate the password to lock it. (note password not key).

Otherwise just get a modchip and an unlocked drive.

I wish I got given an xbox beerchug.gif

Whenever I change over someones HDD i always make sure it is unlocked with Configmagic first. I know its a bit late now but for the future... This way I always have 10-15 unlocked 8+10 Gig Hdds
