I received my chip yesterday and am a little overwhelmed about where to start. I have established (before I bought the chip) that I have and Xbox v1.6. So a solderless chip was not an option. I have also read all the installation "manual", but find them a little empty - just pictures really. Seems like they are aimed at people that have done other mods before. So my question is :

What equipment do I need? Is this list correct-

15 Watt fine point soldering iron.
0.032 " Solder
Wire stripper
Disordering Braid
5 wires (30 gauge)
Phillips screwdriver
Funny star shaped screwdriver
Patience

I have checked RadioShack, and they seem rather limited with these items.

* Where can I get fine 30 gauge wire from?
* What are the sizes of the funny star screwdrivers?
* Is there anyone near Reston/Herndon Virginia that I can just pay $30 to do it for me?

Thanks, this information will come in handy for me (anorhter Xbox newbie) as well. I've ordered my SmartXX v2 modchip Friday night, and I should receive it on Wednesday or so. Can't wait...

So I take it the SmartXX package (I ordered it from BMMODS) does not include wires for the LPC rebuild? I've heard several people mention using an old IDE cable. Is that the best option (I definitely have a few old IDE cables that I could spare), or would I be better off hitting Radio Shack for some wires?

The link to the post-install guide is great, too. I still have a few questions, though:

1. The instructions describe performing the installation (flashing the BIOS, etc.) using the web interface that comes with the Smart OS. If my short-term goal is to just get the Xbox running with the SmartXX (i.e. initially I don't care too much about additional software like the media center stuff), would you recommend following these manual installation steps, or would I be better off using an auto-installer such as Slayer's or Firefucker's?

On the one hand, the manual installation would probably be useful in order to understand what goes on behind the scenes. On the other hand, it would be nice to save some time and quickly get everything up and running.

2. I would like to upgrade my HD eventually, but initially I would like to just get my modchip working with the existing HD. Is this approach fine, or would I be much better off performing the HD upgrade at the same time?

Lee,

Your list is generally fine but needs some small modifications.

15 Watt fine point soldering iron. (radioshack has a nice 15/30 dual watt one)
0.032 " Solder is a bit big. i personally like the very fine .015. (radio shack part number 64-035)
Wire stripper
Desoldering Braid (radioshack part # 64-2090)
5 wires (30 gauge) easier to buy a spool (radio shack part number 278-503)
Phillips screwdriver - not needed unless your doing solderless
You WILL need two torqs 10 and 20 however if you do a hard drive upgrade you need 15 as well. They have some decent sets at radioshack and homedepot.
diagnol cutters help as well
Patience and lots of it.

if you cant find the items at your local radioshack you can have them custom order them for you call 1 800 the shack or order through www.radioshack.com

btw if you cant tell i used to work at radioshack lol.

Sfgeek,

first off thanks for ordering from us! The standard SmartXX package does NOT come with enough wire to perform an LCD rebuild. However, if you bought our solder-kit you should be fine. A lot of people like IDE cable, I can't stand it. It feels messy to me and looks ugly. It is also difficult for solder-noobs to tin the wires right.

as far as your post-install questions.

1)to some extent you will have to follow Sigtom's tutorial as auto installers wont run natively. Personally for my own boxs i wouldnt touch an autoinstaller but for freinds i usually just give them a disk rather than mess with it myself.

2)doesnt really matter. if you use the clone 1:1 it takes the same ammount of time if its empty than if its full.

Hi pROvIs,

Thanks, that helps.

I remember seeing the solder kit on your website, but I ended up not buying it because I had to buy a soldering iron and some other tools at Radio Shack anyway, and I figured I could also use a slightly lager amount of solder. But I forgot about the wires. I guess I'll just try to get a spool of 30-gauge wire at Radio Shack.

I'll probably attempt the installation without an auto-installer for now. I figure these might still come in handy later when I want to install particular software, such as emulators.

Thanks everyone for your help, very much appreciated. Seems like there are a bunch of options. For a SmartXX 2.0 and Xbox v 1.6, what am I going for?

A) Quick install
B) QuickSolder install
c) Pinheader install

PS: Radioshack only has the Enamel coated wire (3 in a pack). One is 30 guage. Will that do?

for a 1.6 install the only method i would recomend is pin header.

on another note quickinstall isnt a method its just smartxx's picture diagram rather than a full on picture

any wire that your find works is suitable. i just prefer the "wrapping" wire because it is so fine.

I'd also add tweezers to your list... very fine tweezers. The ones I used that really helped were the kind where you press them, insert the object, release, and they hold the object. I got mine from a local electrical shop.

I'd also seriously recommend a magnifying glass... I got one of those goofy ones on a stand with a couple alligator clips built in for like $8 or something... it helped tremendously.

Neither of these are REQUIRED, but it may save your sanity hehe

I bought 30 gauge wire from radio shack. I got the 30 gauge "insulated wrapping wire (comes in blue, red and white) and it works fine. I have a 1.6 halo ed. w/ a smartxx v2.

Charlie
PS the wire is 50' so there should be enough biggrin.gif

Yeah that's precisely the wire I used, and it rocked. I didn't wanna splurge on a wire stripper... I actually used a combination of my teeth (on longer wires) and a razorblade (on the really freaky short ones) hehe.

Yeah I know, ghetto. It worked! hehe
