Hullo, Right now i am adding a second HDD to my softmodded xbox and i have been looking at all the kinds of hard drives i can get. I was thinking about an external HD cause that would be easier to carry around when i go to friends house and stuff. only problem was i can only find external harddrives that connect by usb. what i was gonna do is get a usb to ide adapter and connect it to the ide cable. i already read that the usb adapter for the controller wont work with external HDDs cause it would be to slow, i was wondering if the same thing would happen with an adapter. Any info would be great!

P.S
If i cant connect with an adapter is there anything i can do to protect an internal hard drive without putting it inside the xbox?

I have never heard of such an adapter. That dosen't necessary mean their isn't one.

The speed problem im almost possitive will be an issue. Not to mention that you'll almost be sure to run into locking/unlocking problems. You see when your hard drive is locked the unlock code is stored in EEprom. Once you take your hard drive out of your xbox you will no longer be able to unlock it without that code. And if you try to unlock your hard drive then you will no longer be able to use your xbox in regular xbox mode. Now I'm not familar with soft mods but im pretty sure you will still run into problems. If you ask me I would highly not recommend doing this thing externally. (belive me you'll regret doing it later)

I have a IDE->USB adapter. I salvaged it from an old LS120 drive. Works great, but... It won't work with the Xbox, because there are no drivers for it. It would work in linux, but that is about it.
