Ok, after about a month since ordering the X3 chip, an xbox, and waiting for a good hard drive deal to pop up that was on the list of known "lockable" drives, I am now ready to do some surgery. The only question I have (right now) is do I hook up and use the xbox sitting in it's factory seal and try it out for a while or can I dig right in now and start the upgrading without power up? I will test the system to see if it works before opening it up, but I wasn't sure if there isn't some sort of burn-in period that I need to let pass before starting...thanks all in advance for the help!

There's no burn in period. You can turn it on though to see that everything works. Play with it for a day or two or dig straight in. Just take your time and make sure you do everything right and you'll be fine.
