before anyone flames him, remember, he is asking a modchips advantages, not which is better like other people have in the past and ended up leaving while crying.

basically a correctly working modchip will almost always mean that your xbox is protected against any updates or changes to the hard drive that MS or you may have accidently made. they do not require as much knowledge or understanding by anyone. like i mentioned earlier it is safe against updates. but they cost more and most of the time require a fair bit of effort to install and ensure that they are working correctly. you dont have to worry about updates to the MS dash.

an exploit's advantage is that it can be removed much more easily if for whatever reason you need to take advantage on your warranty. it is much cheaper and generally easier to install than soldering and whatnot. however a softmod can simply be killed by an update to the xboxes dash (most of the time). also if you have a softmod unlike a modchip if you screw up something on your hard drive then hotswapping or unlocking the hd is required.

not 'dying' as such, just make sure you don't delete anything that you shouldn't. my xbox has been softmodded for 3 months i think? maybe a bit more, and i have never fragged my xbox.

yeah you can upgrade your hard drive. but you need to use your pc to make it and it has to be a lockable hard drive. then you download xboxhdm from the usual places and make a cd with that, then you put your hard drive into your pc, boot with the cd, then build it to make it xbox compatible, you need a backup of your eeprom which ltools makes anyway.

Modchip advantages:
- Loading a diffrent bios (instead of patching the bios in memory)
- Easily disable the chip and boot with the original bios.
- Store more than 1 bios at a time and easily switch between them
- Custom boot screen
- You don't need a memory card (Yes I know you can hotswap but you can't with PAL xboxes, yet)
- Hard drive doesn't have to be locked.

- you can load a different bios just fine with softmods

- true you can easily disable the chip

- a hd can store a lot more bioses than a chip and there are easy ways to switch between them

- true you can edit the boot animation

- like yoshi mentioned you can hotswap fine on pal xboxes. Also you can mod thousands of xboxes with just one mem card while you can mod just one xbox with a chip.

- another advantage of a chip is indeed that it can run unlocked drives just fine.

So basically the main advantage of a chip is just that it is more stable than an exploit and less hard to mess up since no hd files are required and the ability to run unlocked drives.

The advantages of a softmod is that it's cheap, much faster to install, flexible and a hell lot of more fun than a chip.
