I just started coming here a few days ago and it's made me realize that I'm an xbox idiot! You guys know a lot of crap! My question is, how can I know a lot of crap (looking here is an obvious solution, i wanted s/thing in a more user friendly format, i.e.-book)? Problem is, I'm kinda computer dumb to start with. Suggestions?

When I first got into the modding game, this is the first and last stop I made. I would suggest reading the tutorials, faqs. Then after you've read them, read them again. Once you've done that, read them once more. After that just read the newb forums everyday for about a week. You will then have a good sense of the types of problems people frequently run into. Once you have a good idea of the frequent problems go ahead and read the faqs and tutorials one more time.
This is how I learned and while it was time consuming, I haven't once been told to read the flippin tutorials because I've been dumb enough to not search or research anything on my own and asked a question that has been answered a billion times. I'm not saying you're dumb, just to be clear, but this happens a lot (asking questions that have been answered a million times) and everyone's pretty sensative about it in here. Once you do go through all of this a handful of times you will find that as you have questions you will think to yourself, I remember reading that somewhere...Then you'll be able to find it and you can eventually write a book that you can then make a million dollars selling to all those people who want one. Happy hacking...have a nice holiday. |

That or you go into this whole thing blindfolded and not knowing what a bios is and you'll run into the problems most people have in this forum. If you read you're most likely not going to have any of these problems.
GOOD LUCK! you'll be fine This post has been edited by twinski9909: Dec 23 2004, 10:42 PM |

I didn't know a thing about Xbox modding at first either. I bought my xbox for the specific purpose of modding it to play DivX on my TV. Read the FAQ's but don't put a whole lot of stock in them. Some of the info there is contradictory and outdated. Not saying they are completely useless, just not the word of god. The tutorials are the real source of knowledge. That and the search function. Always search. If nothing show's up at first, try changing the options or searching for posts of any date (not just newer than 30 days). Alot of the knowledge though just comes from actually sitting down and doing it. I read the TSOP tutorials over and over again and I was still confused. I sat down though, followed them step by step, and then I really got a feel for what it was all about. Also, don't ask the stupid questions like which modchip is the best, where should I buy a modchip, which dash is the best, ect. And always remember, piracy and download talks will get you a ban. Even if you are "downloading a backup of a game you own" it is still not allowed in these forums. If however, you have question or problem backing up a game you own, that is allowed. Just now download talks. If you have any questions about where to downloading the neat apps and utilities people are always talking about, read the tutorial called A Guide to Using Xbins under Other Tutorials. But basically, read. Search and read. And ask questions.

1. LOTS OF READING...
i got started on xbox modding exactly one year ago. i know way much now than when i started out. i read everything i could find including outdated stuff and very technical documents (even things i didn't understand). 2. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... there's nothing better to help you learn something than doing it yourself. this method helped me out a lot with softmods since the tuts just didn't make sense to me at first. anything you desperately want to learn...do it yourself 3. EXPERIMENT... pretty simple, try different variations/ways of doing things and try to do something new that isn't explained anywhere. you might figure something out on your own...which makes it more fun there's lots of good info outside these forums and X-S alltogether. when i modded my xbox at first, i didn't even visit these forums. only the tuts on X-S and on the net got me through good luck This post has been edited by atomiX: Dec 23 2004, 11:18 PM |
