this drive isnt that old like less than 9 months, i burned 5 dvd's in a row and went to do a 6th and it wouldnt read the blank disk, so i put in a blank cdr still nothing, put in an audio disk opened up win amp, nothing, still opens the tray device manager says there is no problem with the device, could the laser just go out like that, i have burned probably close to 300 or so disks with this drive, i hope this isnt an avarage

im gonna try a new ide cable tomorrow but a pionner A05 as a master works with no problem, the plextor is a slave to the pioneer

i upgraded firmware to the newest straight from plextor web site and still nothing, it doesnt want to detect any kind of disk at all

any suggestions on what else to try

i dont mean to be a dick but if i cant get it working ima go buy another one and return this one, only because it takes way less time then to phone plextor send it to them and wait to get it back for a repair, that is a last resort though, i wanna figure what the hell happened if i can, ive restarted the pc a few times and still nothing, ran through the troubleshoot and it says it cant help me with my problem

I have the exact drive 716a, I haven't had any problems with it yet. I've burnt over 150 dvds with it so far. Since it was working fine be4 I would say check the IDE cable, it could possibly be the laser since you've used it more than me, but I hope not. Other than that make sure it's set DMA and not in RAID. Also download the Plextor Toolz and check the drives stats and setup.

Here's the deal, if you really haven't changed anything on your computer between when it worked and when it didn't (i.e. installed new hardware or software, flashed firmware, etc.) then it probably is broken. Something doesn't just stop working without a reason.
