based on the above guide, there does not seem to be a 5V supply to the aladdin XT chip. Is it necessary to run a 5V supply to this chip for it to function or is this guide perfect and should i follow it exactly ?

That guide will work fine. +5 Volts is only needed if you want to add a led and resistor to your aladdin Xt !

I think he means 5v is for the LCD.
