I looked through pages for a topic like this, and you can't search for "X3" because it's less than 4 characters. Sorry if it's been asked before, but this should be in a sticky somewhere.

Can someone breakdown the respective advantages and disadvantages of the X3 and X3CE?

they are the same chip, basically same features. The x3 CE came after the x3, and added some features with made it easier to install.

Are the added features only for installation convenience, and is that specific to the version of the xBox?

And is there a general opinion regarding whether the X3 CE is worth the extra bucks?

if the x3 CE is going to cost you more, buy the x3. there is no reason you should pay more for that. yea, the x3 CE makes installing on a 1.6 xbox a little easier, but not worth extra money.

If you're buying the X3 (not CE) and installing on a pre 1.6 Xbox, remember to either insulate the alt 5v pin on the chip, or desolder it completely.

I'm seeing the X3 going for around $40, and I haven't seen an X3 CE for under 50 yet... maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot.

Don't flame me if this is a stupid question, but what does the little wheel do on the X3CE chip that are being shipped now?
