well this is my first time doing this and i have cut out the jewel and a dvd window with my dremel but the edges are really rought what kind of tool should i use for smoothing them out.

yea file/sandpaper is your best bet and try the drum sander bit on your dremel beerchug.gif

edit: or a sanding spunge may be a better alternative.
